Caring For Your Rotator Cuff Muscles
Each joint in our bodies plays an significant role in allowing us to move. Joints are rather complex, with bone and muscle connected by tendons. The set up has to be just right to keep the bones together and in the proper position, even when they are being put in various positions.
The most important part of the shoulder is the rotator cuff. Here is how it works. The scapula, or shoulder blade, meets the humerus at the shoulder, with the ball or head of the humerus fitting into the shallow socket or glenoid fossa, of the scapula.
Rotator cuff is composed of various muscles that are combined to work well with each other. Rotator cuff muscles are as follows:
Supraspinatus muscle This muscle is responsible for abducting the arm, or bringing it away from the body. It is the most often used, and therefore the most often torn or injured.
Infraspinatus muscle This one is responsible for rotation of the arm externally (away from the body).
Teres Minor muscle This muscle also is involved in external rotation of the arm.
Subscapularis muscle Initiates and carries out the internal rotation of the humerus (turning toward the body).
We usually referred these four muscles as SITS. They and the tendons that attach them wrap around and attach to the bones of the shoulder. This allows them to pull the bones in the desired direction.
Most people's rotator cuff muscles are not strong, compared to other muscles, even though they are often used. It is very common for them to become damaged. The most frequent injury to the rotator cuff muscles is a tear which usually occurs in the tendons.
When overused or suddenly and strenuously used a tear in the rotator cuff muscles may occur. However, it is also very common for a tear to happen over time. You might have a tear in your rotator cuff and not even know it until the tear worsens and symptoms begin to appear.
We should take care of our rotator cuff muscles. Because they are such an important group of muscles, when something goes wrong it can really put you out of action for a long time.
If you are interested in keeping your rotator cuff muscles in good condition, exercise is the thing to do! There are specific stretches and exercises that target this muscle group building up its tolerance and strength.
The most common symptom that shows you have a cut on your rotator cuff muscles is when you experience pain in your shoulder. Don't ignore this! If you do have a tear it can easily become worse and the symptoms can get worse, too leading to a need for more drastic treatment measures and a longer recovery.
